Enjoy a different Holy Week at the island of Ibiza! These dates are unbeatable for bringing any visitor closer to the passion and devotion of Spain’s oldest culture. Currently, there exists seven brotherhoods in Ibiza that elaborate every Easter a complete program, allowing anyone to soak up this tradition.

Friday of Sorrows

This is the first procession that crosses the island’s streets; it departs from the Cathedral and goes down the streets of Dalt Vila.

Palm Sunday

In first place, the delivery of palms on behalf of the Brotherhood of the Holy Reclining Christ takes place in the Town Hall square. Afterwards, the blessing takes place at Santo Domingo Church, followed by a procession in the Cathedral. Palms are also blessed in many other brotherhoods, such as: Our Lady of Mercy in Sant Elm; the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of the Great Power in the Park of La Paz; the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Captive in the square Vicent Calbet – and all of these reach their highest point with beautiful processions.

Afterwards, the Hand-kissing of Our Father Jesus of the Great Power takes place following the seven o’clock afternoon mass, in the Rosario church. The day ends with a mass and the procession of the Holy Christ of Agony and the Virgin of Hope in the church of Santa Cruz. This day, filled to the brim with devotion, doesn’t leave anyone indifferent.

Holy Monday

The processions celebrated on this day in the city of Ibiza come to life at the Church of Santo Domingo, as is the case of the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Cemetry’s procession.

Holy Tuesday

From Ibiza’s Cathedral a Vía Crucis is celebrated in Ibiza’s penitentiary centre by the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Captive; afterwards, there is a mass and a procession of the Brothers of the Holy Lying Christ.

Holy Wednesday

On this day, the Jesus of the Great Power is worshipped, accompanied by the blessing of palms which takes place in the Parque de la Paz. There is also a meeting between the Virgin of Hope and the Great Power as it passes through Santa Cruz. One must not forget the hand-kissing tradition in Rosario Church, which is the base of this saint’s brotherhood.

Holy Thursday

On this date, the Rosary of Dawn takes place, processing from the temple of Santa Cruz all the way to the Cathedral. Afterwards, there is a Chrism Mass in the Cathedral, followed by a Mass “In Coena Domini” and, finally, a Mass of the Lord’s Supper and foot washing in Santa Cruz church by the Brotherhood of Jesus Captive, which culminates with this brotherhood’s procession.

Good Friday

A Stations of the Cross of the Holy Christ of Agony takes place from the church of Santa Cruz to the Cathedral, followed by a service in the Cathedral. The procession of the Holy Burying also departs on this day alongside all the brotherhoods of the island.

Easter Sunday

The blessing of the new image of Our Resurrected Father Jesus of the Brotherhood of Jesus Captive takes place. Afterwards, there is a mass and a procession of the Meeting between the Risen Christ and his Mother on the Vara de Rey promenade. Finally, Easter Mass takes place in Santa Cruz church.
